Marin Event of Interest

Walk Into History - The Corte Madera Shoreline

Date:

03/27/10

Time:

9:30 AM to 1:00 PM

Description:

Wetland preservation wasn’t a widely used term in the early 1970s when Marin Conservation League established a fund for acquisition and permanent preservation of the 92-acre Heerdt tidal salt marsh at the mouth of Corte Madera Creek. It was the last remnant of the once-extensive salt marsh system along the Bay in southern Marin. Many changes have taken place along this shoreline in the forty years since MCL also purchased tidal lots to prevent further filling and development of the Bay! These are just two of the stories that we will explore along the Corte Madera Shoreline as we take another Walk into History, the fourth in MCL’s series of revisiting landscapes that have been transformed even while vital lands and wetlands were being preserved. Jana Haehl will recount history, and we will be joined by wetlands biologist Katherine Cuneo, Ph.D.
