Equipment
The most important piece of equipment is a yoga mat, which is usually about ½” thick dense foam. The tacky, non-slick surface of the mat will aid you in maintaining various poses. Many studios will provide mats, but if you want to practice at home, it may be best to purchase your own mat and bring it to class. Yoga mats are readily available at sporting goods and department stores and cost from $15 to $30.
There are various types of supporting equipment, such as blocks, belts, blankets and pads that can facilitate your practice. As you learn how to use these items, you can decide if you want to purchase them for your home practice.
Clothing
Wear comfortable clothing that is either loose fitting or can stretch. Since you may be sitting or lying an all sides of your body, it is best to have clothing without pockets, belt loops, grommets, etc.
Yoga is always performed bare footed. If you need to cover your feet, consult with the instructor, as some yoga studios may restrict the types of footwear allowed in the classrooms.
