Before attempting organized athletic swimming, long-distance recreational swimming, or when swimming in the ocean, higher levels of skill and expertise are necessary. In the ocean, hidden currents and riptides are extremely dangerous even to trained swimmers. When going on long, deep, or difficult swims or dives, always be accompanied by a friend. For any group of swimmers, if there’s no lifeguard, there should be one person along as an observer. When swimming in large bodies of water, judge a safe distance from the lifeguard based on your skill level, speed and stamina. If you ever feel that a planned swim may be unsafe, take a lesson. Never feel embarrassed about taking lessons – most people aren’t professional swimmers either.
