Birding is wonderful outdoor activity – with a little extra effort, it can be physical too!

Birding is a great way to get yourself, family and friends outside and walking Marin's beautiful natural spaces. With about 500 different species of birds in Marin County, there is a seemingly never ending supply of reasons to get outside.

Birding requires very little more than motivation, a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a desire to get to know the nature around us. Add in a pair of binoculars and a good guide book and you are ready to see more than you expect.

To make it physical, add 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking. The goal is to use your large leg muscles and increase your heart rate. The walking does not have to be all at one time. Park your car about mile from your birding destination. Precede your birding excursion with a brisk walk or a bike ride. Or, select something you might like to do en route to or from birding.
