Just as drivers and cyclists must safely Share t he Road, cyclists, joggers and pedestrians need to Share The Path. Marin County has an extensive network of well used and often scenic multi-use paths where people engaged in a diverse range of locomotion are happily getting around.

It is necessary for all path users to be familiar with the guidelines that govern safe use of these shared facilities. These guidelines clarify etiquette and outline the safest practices to prevent injury and avoid chaos on the path; they allow all users of the path to coexist peacefully.

The Share the Path guidelines below come from the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.

Share the Path Rules

Everyone

All path users, including bicyclists, joggers and walkers of all ages should be respectful of other users regardless of their mode, speed or level of skill. Be sensitive to how others perceive you.  This will provide a positive image for your mode of transportation and minimize conflicts.

Cyclists

*  Stay to the right
*  Pass on the left
*  Ride in single file
*  Slow down when pedestrians are on the path
*  Check behind you before pulling out to pass
*  Ring your bell or call out when passing

Pedestrians

*  Stay to the right of the paved path or use the gravel shoulder
*  Move off the paved path if you stop moving
*  Keep dogs on a leash, and don’t let the leash stretch across the paved path
*  Be careful not to block the path when you’re with a large group

*  Listen for and be aware of traffic coming from behind you
