Always lock your bike!
The problem with bicycles is that they are not very heavy or large and are therefore easily movable; they won’t just stay where you leave them, unless you lock them onto something.
Bicycles have become valuable commodities these days. Don’t be surprised if the one day you leave your bike unlocked because you’re only going to be away for a few moments is the time that your bicycle is snatched in a moment.
So we’ll say it again: Always lock your bike!
Here are a few general rules that apply to just about every bike parking situation :
- Remove all accessories from your bike when it’s locked in a public place. This means bags, lights, pumps, water bottles, your helmet, etc.
- Secure everything that is not bolted onto your bike, including your wheels if you have quick release axles. If there is a quick release on the seat post, consider installing a seat-leash to deter thieves from taking your saddle.
- Be wary of remotely located bike racks. Always select a highly visible location in which to leave your bike locked. If there is no rack or not a highly visible one available, use a light pole, metal railing, parking meter, etc., to lock your bike to. Use a tree only as a last resort – remember, trees are objects of reverence, not security.
- Secure your bike respectfully, without blocking sidewalks, entrances, parking spaces, etc.
