As you become more familiar with bicycling, chances are you will more often feel like leaving your car at home and taking your bike instead. This can also lead to experimentation with longer and more complex trips. At some point, you’ ll discover that you can combine a recreational ride with a transit ride to commute to work, run some errands, or do some sightseeing.

One of the best ways to integrate cycling into your everyday life is to go “multi-modal.” The term multi-modal describes the practice of utilizing more than one form of transportation to make a trip, and in this case we’re talking about extending your bicycle trip with a ride on public transit.

Combining your bike ride with a transit trip can save time and money, take you places beyond the range of a casual bike ride, and permit you to connect with your community in a more intimate way.  Weather conditions, time constraints, geographical barriers, or even just for fun are all great reasons to use multi-modal travel.

T he Bay Area features fairly well-connected transit systems , so your travel experience may include a bus, ferry, cable car, light-rail or passenger train. And guess what…you can bring your bike!

Transit rides are typically a pleasant experience – you can read, meet new people, rest, or listen to music as you daydream out the window. All of these are much more fun than sitting behind the wheel of a car in traffic, and you don’t have to search for a parking space when you reach your destination.
