The bicycle represents a child’s first taste of true freedom and independence, providing a means of extended and autonomous transportation, and allowing adventure beyond the restraint and security of one’s parents. It is an incredibly satisfying experience for a child to balance and pedal independently in his or her world. The bicycle is our first encounter with personal transportation.
The opportunity to develop healthy habits that will stay with young people throughout their development occurs in their formative years. Introducing bicycles to children can encourage an inclination toward physical activity and away from dependence on motorized transportation, a love of the outdoors, and a sense of responsibility to interact with other travelers safely and responsibly.
If you are old enough or fortunate enough to have experienced riding your bike to school, you understand the joys of that simple trek through your neighborhood.
For today’s young people, programs like Marin County’s Safe Routes to Schools program are helping to reinstate the widespread practice of bicycling to school by providing bicycle safety education and encouraging activities for children. Parents continue to discover that cycling can provide an activity that is participatory and fun for the whole family.
